Epiphytes cling to the trunks and branches of trees for support. They usually start life in the trees by being deposited as a seed in bird droppings or the droppings of arboreal animals like possums and tree kangaroos. Their shape collects fallen leaves and moisture which provides the nutrition they need to survive. The Strangling Fig begins as an epiphyte and then sends down roots to the ground. |
